Wakamatsu Colony, First Japanese Settlement in America
On June 8, 1869, twenty-two settlers from Aizu-Wakamatsu, fleeing Japan's Boshin War, established the Wakamatsu Tea and Silk Colony at Gold Hill, California — the first Japanese settlement in the continental United States. Drought and failed crops doomed it within two years, but it marks the beginning of Japanese America.
