On November 7, 1978, Hawaii voters ratified amendments from the 1978 Constitutional Convention establishing the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to advance Native Hawaiian self-determination and manage assets for Native Hawaiian beneficiaries.
On November 7, 2000, Saghir Tahir won a seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives, becoming the first Pakistani American elected to any U.S. state legislature and among the first Muslim Americans to hold legislative office. An engineer who immigrated in 1972, he served four terms.
On November 7, 2006, Kim Coco Iwamoto, a Japanese American attorney, won a seat on Hawaiʻi's statewide Board of Education — becoming the first openly transgender person elected to statewide office in the U.S. and, at the time, the highest-ranking openly transgender elected official in the country.
