Mark Takano Becomes First Openly Gay Person of Color in Congress
On November 6, 2012, Mark Takano, a Japanese American teacher from Riverside whose grandparents and parents were incarcerated during WWII, was elected to the U.S. House — the first openly gay person of color elected to Congress.
First Bangladeshi American Elected to a State Legislature
On November 6, 2018, Sheikh Rahman won election to the Georgia State Senate, becoming the first Bangladeshi American elected to a U.S. state legislature — as well as the first Muslim and first Asian American in the Georgia Senate. He immigrated from Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, in the 1980s.
