United States Captures Guam

On June 21, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, the U.S. completed its capture of Guam when Marines from the USS Charleston went ashore at Piti to accept the Spanish surrender (the engagement had begun June 20). Guam became a U.S. territory, beginning the modern CHamoru-U.S. relationship.
