Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands Established

On July 18, 1947, the United States became the administering authority of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, taking control of some 2,000 islands across Micronesia — the Marianas, Carolines, and Marshalls. The trusteeship framed decades of U.S. governance, nuclear testing, and the later Compacts of Free Association.
