On July 1, 1946, the U.S. detonated the first postwar nuclear weapon at Bikini Atoll in Operation Crossroads, having removed the Bikini people months earlier. It began a decade of testing that left Bikini uninhabitable — a legacy continued by Castle Bravo in 1954.
