Displaced Persons Act of 1948 Signed
On June 25, 1948, President Truman signed the Displaced Persons Act, the first U.S. refugee law, admitting some 200,000 European refugees displaced by World War II while excluding Asians from its relief. A later provision allowed several thousand Chinese stranded in the U.S. by the 1949 Communist revolution to gain permanent residency.
