American Samoa Elects Its First Governor
On November 23, 1977, American Samoa held its first gubernatorial election, choosing Peter Tali Coleman — the first popularly elected governor of the territory, whose governors had until then been appointed by the U.S. He was inaugurated January 3, 1978.
