On November 26, 1988, the Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple was inaugurated in Hacienda Heights, California — at the time the largest Buddhist temple in the Western Hemisphere. The first overseas branch of Taiwan's Fo Guang Shan order, its name means 'coming west,' marking the growth of Chinese and Taiwanese American Buddhism.
