Transcontinental Railroad Completed
On May 10, 1869, the driving of the Golden Spike at Promontory Summit, Utah, completed the Transcontinental Railroad. Chinese immigrants made up some 90% of the Central Pacific's workforce, blasting and grading through the Sierra Nevada for lower pay than white workers; as many as a thousand died. None appeared in the famous 'champagne photo' of the ceremony.
